Private Eye’s Romantic England – The Last Days of Macmilian

By Christopher Booker, Richard Ingrams, and William Rushton with additional material by Trog (Wally Fawkes), Gerald Scarfe, Barry Fantoni, Ralph Steadman and Frank Dickens.

Published 1963 by Weidenfeld and Nicolson

First Edition

A 160 page hardback.

Published without a dust jacket. Pictorial paper covered boards. Black and white photographs and illustrations throughout.Private Eye’s content captures the feel of the early sixties, not just its satirical pieces, but also its adverts which have a slightly sleezy edge to them, a sort of Soho sophistication.  It’s also surprising how similar the issues are to today’s concerns, bribery, privilege, sexual intrigue, misuse of power.  Certainly many of the strap lines could be, and probably are, used in 2024.

Condition is Fine+,

Slightly grubby covers moderate corner wear and 2cm crack at bottom of spine, binding remains firm.  Pages and illustrations are off white and clean firmly attached to the spine.  No handwriting, tears or creases.

Nice for a 60 year old book.
