James Harrison Wilson Thompson was born in Delaware in 1906. He found an interest in costume design and textiles while on the board of the famous Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.

In 1947 he came upon an enclave of Thai weavers who lived in an idyllic small community called Banh Krua, in the heart of Bangkok. Thompson had his fresh portfolio of hand-woven silks sent to New York where they captivated the leading names of fashion, including Edna Woolman Chase, the influential Editor of Vogue.

Following on from this success his business prospered, and he opened his first shop on Bangkok’s famous Surawong Road. He also acquired a diverse collection of Thai art and by 1959 his collection was so extensive he built a place to house it; 6 old teakwood houses were transported to the Bangkok riverside where you can still visit and immerse yourself in his life today!

On March 26th, 1967, while holidaying in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia, he went for a walk and never returned. Despite an exhaustive search his body has never been found. This disappearance just adds to the mystique of Thompson.

Over half a century later he is still revered and regarded as the man who saved the Thai silk industry.
