From Wikipedia:

John Lee Comstock (September 25, 1787, East Lyme, Connecticut – November 21, 1858, Hartford, Connecticut) was an American surgeon and educator, who served as a surgeon in the War of 1812.

Following the war, Comstock produced numerous books on science, including works on botany, chemistry, mineralogy, natural history and physiology, targeting schools and general audiences, his books were widely used.

In the absence of international copyright law, some of his works "borrowed" heavily from European authors such as Edward Turner (Elements of Chemistry, 1827) and Jane Marcet (Conversations on Chemistry, 1806). In the same way, Comstock's works were edited and republished in England and Prussia by others.

In 1828 Comstock was issued the first patent in the United States for the waterproofing of cloth or leather.

DESCRIPTION:

408 pages

7 1/2 x 5 inches

leather hardcover

CONDITION:

This hard-cover book is in very good condition. It has had some restoration or repairs. The book has been rebound and replaced in its original leather covered boards. The original spine leather has been relaid over a new leather spine and the joints have been colored to approximate the old leather. The old leather boards are stained, scuffed and worn at the corners and edges. The boards are a bit warped outwards. The leather has been treated and is quite stable and has a nice feel. The front endpapers are original and show some old inked names. The rear endpaper has been replaced with old paper. The only writing in the book is some penciling on that last page. The interior is in pretty good shape with no major marks, underlining, tears or odor. The text pages show fairly heavy foxing in places with a few small water-stains in the top margins of the center sections. Although a bit toned with age, the paper is not brittle. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages.
