From Wikipedia:

Albert Schweitzer, (14 January 1875 – 4 September 1965) was a French-German theologian, organist, philosopher, and physician. He was born in the German province of Alsace-Lorraine and although that region had been reintegrated into the German Empire four years earlier, and remained a German province until 1918, he considered himself French and wrote mostly in German. His mother-tongue was Alsatian German.

Schweitzer, a Lutheran, challenged both the secular view of Jesus as depicted by historical-critical methodology current at this time, as well as the traditional Christian view. His contributions to the interpretation of Pauline Christianity concern the role of Paul's mysticism of “being in Christ” as primary and the doctrine of Justification by Faith as secondary.

He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of “Reverence for Life”, expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, now in Gabon, west central Africa (then French Equatorial Africa). As a music scholar and organist, he studied the music of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach and influenced the Organ Reform Movement (Orgelbewegung).

From the dust jacket description:

The LIFE OF ALBERT SCHWEITZER has been so full and vital and so rich in human interest and helpfulness that it has a strong appeal for all ages. In a lucid, straightforward manner which will hold the interest of youth and age alike, Jacquelyn Berrill has written about the man who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. She appreciatively presents the many-sided story of his boyhood in Alsace, his struggles and difficult experiences as a student, his early career as a musician and scholar, and his dramatic turning to medicine and Africa when at the height of his fame. She describes vividly Albert Schweitzer’s great service in building and maintaining a jungle hospital on the banks of a river deep in Africa, and all the dangerous adventures and amusing mishaps that came his way.

This many-sided book contains intimate stories of the doctor’s relations with the dark people who flocked to his jungle hospital, with the wild creatures of the forest and river who came to know his as fiend. It also shows him as an outstanding concert organist, playing to crowded audiences throughout Europe, giving music in return for funds to maintain and develop his beloved hospital; and it picots him as an old man, strong in mind and body, receiving homage from the whole world but still putting his service to the Africans before all else. He is a personality to read about and to inspire to devoted service for mankind.
