The Los Angeles Athletic Club's (LAAC) Mercury magazine is a weekly publication that has been in circulation since 1911. The magazine is named after the Roman god of merchants, thieves, and winged sandals.

The Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) was founded in 1880 by 40 prominent Angelenos in Frank Gibson's law office, making it the city's first private club. The club's founders wanted to use physical activity to develop a "superior race" and to dispel stereotypes of "lazy" Californians. The club's original purpose was to provide members with physical development and the advantages of a gentlemen's club.

The club's membership has included Hollywood celebrities like Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and Johnny Weissmuller, as well as other notable figures like Walt Disney, Clark Gable, and Will Rogers.
