Age Of Consent

By Norman Lindsay

Published by Farrar & Rinehart, Inc, New York, 1938

The very rare 1938 First Edition First Printing

With the Grosset and Dunlap, New York, 1938 First Edition First Printing Dustjacket

The dustjacket is identical to the Farrar & Rhinehart dustjacket bar the name of the Publisher to the spine.

There are 28 drawings by Norman Lindsay - a humorous and frisky autobiographical novel initially banned (for sexual explicitness) in Australia.

An excerpt from the Publisher's synopsis - "Bradly Mudgett was a terribly shy painter - a refugee from the world. To him, a rented shanty by a deserted beach on the South Coast of New South Wales was a perfect place to live. But all of a sudden he found himself surrounded by (of all things) people.

First there was Cora, brown as bush honey and ripening like a peach in the sun. On the edge of maturity, she seemed as shy as Bradly himself (though - thank the stars - not as modest), and she turned out to be just what he needed - to paint, of course...".

From a letter (not part of this item) to Norman Lindsay's sister, Mary, Norman sheds some light on the central character: "Perce [older brother of Norman] had a lot of intimate stuff about people which to me was just vague legend. His memory was at fault once for he insisted...the water colour painter who for a time was guest to Mrs Edmunds of the bank, had a red beard, whereas he had a big black beard. His whole appearance and personality was so stamped on my mental retina that I used him as the central figure in a little novel called Age of Consent, just now being re-printed here...".
