Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, 1929 -) emerged on the New York art scene during the sixties. He received his formal artistic training at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts and then emigrated to the United States in 1957. Yayoi Kusama's first solo exhibition, Kusama, took place just two years later. His paintings are a direct reflection of childhood hallucinations and, through her work, we see a woman working hard to unravel the intricate patterns of her own mind. Kusama's early experiments with repetitive images, mirrors, and soft sculpture preceded similar works by Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) and Claes Oldenburg (American, 1929 -). Despite family and social resistance, Yayoi Kusama has become one of the most prominent figures in the art world today. Yayoi Kusama is a well-known name throughout the world and is affectionately called the "Queen of Polka Dots" by her devotees. Kusama opened her personal museum in Tokyo in 2017 and her 'Infinity Mirror Rooms' have been installed in major art galleries around the world.
