Civil War cover with Sept. 1, 1862 dated POTTSVILLE, PA double circle postmark and pair of #65 3c rose with circle grid cancels, addressed to Miss Emma St. C. Nichols, care of Col. Wm. A. Nichols, U.S.A., at Elizabeth, NJ. 

WILLIAM AUGUSTUS NICHOLS SR., (1818-1869), an 1838 West Point grad, served in the Adjutant General's Dept. during the Civil War. He was breveted Brigadier General on Sept. 24, 1865, and Brvt. Major Gen., Mar. 13, 1865; After the War, he served as Chief of Staff to Lt. General William Tecumseh Sherman, 1866-1869, and as Chief of Staff to Lt. Gen. Phil Sheridan from March 4, 1869 until his death the next month, on Apr. 8th, at St. Louis, at age 51.
