The lioness is the sacred animal of the goddess of Memphis, Sekhmet, whose name means strong.

Sekhmet, which means the strong one, was always represented as a lady with the head of a lioness, or as a lady with the head of a lioness, sitting on the throne, which was decorated with the sign of the unification of northern and southern Egypt, and holding in her hand the key of life, the Ankh, with a sun disk and a cobra on top of her head.
