You are buying a used but in perfect working condition Dell PowerEdge R530 Server that is running the latest Synology Firmware (DSM 7.2) for DiskStation DS220+ under an ESXI 7 virtual environment. Though not supported by Synology, it is possible to run their software on your own hardware. For this installation I used a valid serial number sourced from a broken DS220+ so you can register this device in your Synology account and have access to those apps that require registration.

This server comes with a single 12 core E5-2680 v3 CPUs running at a base frequency of 2.5 GHz and a maximum of 3.3 GHz and has 48GB of RAM. Of these, I allocated 8 vCPUs as well as 32GB of RAM to the Synology VM (Virtual Machine). These values can be changed from the ESXi Dashboard as needed.

In terms of storage, it has a Perc H730 RAID controller, configured in HBA mode (NON-RAID). It supports up to 8, SAS-3 (12Gbit/s) as well as SATA-3 (6Gbit/s) 3.5" HDDs. The ESXi OS is installed on an internal USB flash drive and the DSM OS on a 128GB NVME drive. It also has 4 x 1TB SATA drives that are currently configured in a single SHR-1 pool. In order to add more drives to the DSM you will need to assign them first by editing the Synology VM. The last 3 pictures illustrate the process.

As far as networking, this server has four Gigabit Ethernet ports. I configured port 1 as the default port for accessing the ESXi as well as the Synology VM. There's also another Ethernet port (iDRAC) that is dedicated to the iDRAC management controller. Among other things, it can be used to remotely power on/off the server and for console access (see pictures).

Both the ESXi and the DSM Operating Systems are configured to receive an IP automatically (DHCP), so check your router for their IPs in order to access them. Alternatively the DSM can be accessed at nas/. The login credentials for the ESXi GUI (as well as the iDRAC) are root/Passw0rd and those of the DSM, sroot/Passw0rd. The DSM virtual machine is configured to boot automatically, so you don’t have to do anything. Once everything is initialized (it takes about 5-6 minutes), just point your browser to the DSM IP address (or hostname) and start using your NAS server as you would a normal DS220+.
