William Dugdale

Sir William Dugdale (1605-1686) was born in Warwickshire, and became a noted antiquary, herald, and historian. He would study at the libraries of Oxford, which would lay the foundation for the information in the present work

Titles in red and black, gold leaf border to main title, 5 folding genealogical tables, extra-illustrated with contemporary portrait of Charles the Second by Loggan as frontispiece, numerous coats of arms pasted in to text, bound with additional facsimile of pp. 579-582 in variant state, occasional ink annotations [e.g pen and ink shield to p33], ink stamp of David Thomas Powell to flyleaf, loose ms index by Powell, letter from Hugh Penfold to John Gregory Crace dated 1867 loosely inserted discussing the facsimile pages which Penfold had printed from his own copy, Crace’s receipt bound in, Crace’s bookplate and a later bookplate to endpaper.


Condition: See photos as part of condition report: Bound in period Russia Calf, with the spine reached in modern calf, holding firmly, some abrasions to the board edges, a few marks to the boards, Corners of the boards chipped, with the upper back corner lacking a small amount of calf, Collates as complete with all pagination errors as issued with pagination occasionally jumping. See above for the personalisation in this volume, text block firm, pages still crisp, with some browning and foxing.
