1757 COLONIAL DEED * PHILLIPSTOWN MAINE

Sanford, Maine, called by its early name of Philipstown, was settled in 1739 after the French and Indian Wars calmed down and settlers lured from coastal York County. In this deed it has variant spelling....Philipstown, Philipstowne

In this deed, John Thompson of Phillipstown, husband, "in his County of York in his Majesty's Province of Massachusetts Bay sold a lot to John Urin of Phillipstown.  The land contained "one hundred twenty eight acres and a half, "all of lot number two with the addition except one acre and a half I reserve for myself."

John Thompson signed 6 September 1757 "in the 31st Year of the Year of the Reign of our Sovering Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland". Priscilla Thompson (her mark) signed to release dower.  Witnesses were Joseph Round and John Stanyan.

On the first Tuesday of April 1758, John Stanyon acknowledged that he saw John Thompson, "now dead", sign, seal and deliver his deed.  Daniel Moulton received and recorded the deed at York County 3 March 1759. Attested at court by John Frost, JP.

As to condition of the 267 year old document....it is in one piece and fills two pages, front and back. The red seals are present. There are folds but no splits, no pinholes. The edges are ragged but nothing missing. On the front side, along the middle folded area, there is fuzziness, but I could read it all even though the text was lighter. The rest of the text is dark and clear. The document will be sent promptly and safely first class along an existing fold. Please ask any questions.

I will be listing more 18th century and early 19th century documents from New Hampshire and Maine as time permits. Please take a look back in time. Thank you.
