JAMES ROBERT GRANVILLE EXLEY R.E. 1878-1967

‘A MATCH IN STRENGTH, IN COURAGE, AND IN AGE’ 1929

Original pencil signed etching

A fine impression in excellent condition with no defects, signed and titled in the plate and signed in pencil.

This is an early state of the plate before the addition of aquatint.

This comes from an Exley family collection and has never been mounted or framed.

A superb typical example of his work.

An example of this etching was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1930 (No.1232), RE also 1930 (No.141) and also listed in Fine Prints of the Year 1929.

Illustrated and detailed in Celia Austin’s book on Exley page 88.

Plate size is 178x153mm on laid paper with the ‘Hand Made’ watermark 293x230mm

I am listing several other Exley prints all from the same collection.

Exley was a fine artist who exhibited etchings from 1906 to at least 1940. He studied under and was a friend of Sir Frank Short. He had a one-man exhibition at James Connells, Old Bond Street in 1929 which included this etching. He exhibited over 40 etchings at the RA, is listed and illustrated in Fine Prints of the Year, and is listed and illustrated in Guichard’s ‘British Etchers 1850-1940’.
