On May 27, 1897, a new coinage of the One Peso was authorized to begin in 1898 as a permanent replacement of the historic 8 Reales coin. The obverse eagle was redesigned to show the more majestic coat of arms typical of 1898, as well as a bolder cap and rays design on the reverse. (see Buttrey and Hubbard, 1971, A Guidebook of Mexican Coins).

This coin type was minted from 1898 to 1909, and at mints in Mexico City (Mo), Zacatecas (Zs), Culiacan (Cn), and Guanajuato (Go). Each year, the Mexico City mint produced as much or more coins than all the other mints combined.
