Development and production history:
Continuing the trend of the popular Aero Albatros, the L-159 ALCA (Advanced Light Combat Aircraft) is the latest and most advanced aircraft to come off the Aero production line. In a world where the cold war is no longer the centerpoint of virtually all politics and conflicts and where defence spending suffers from serious cut-backs, a market is opening up for countries that wish to modernise their aircraft fleet, but haven't got the economy for buying the latest western fighters.
    Since 1992, the L-159 has been under development and the first aircraft (a two-seater) flew in August 1997. Later, in 1998, the first single-seater took to the skies. The twin-seat production prototype pf the L-159B flew on June 1, 2002.

Features and service history:
The first indication that this is not just another version of the older L-39/L-59, you get when looking into the cockpit. It is highly user-friendly and looks like the interior of any modern day western fighter. It features a Flight Vision FV-3000 HUD and two multifunction color displays for tactical information and weapons systems. Most combat functions are controlable from buttons on throttle and stick giving it almost HOTAS status. Furthermore, the entire cockpit is Night Vision Goggles (NVG) compatible.
    With missions ranging from fighter trainer to full scale combat, the radar system had to be able to operate in many different modes. For this purpose, the FIAR Grifo-L radar was selected. It has eight air-to-air or track-while-scan modes, four air combat modes and ten air-to-surface modes, giving the operator any mode required. For navigation, a Honeywell Inertial Navigation System (INS) and GPS is installed. Also capable of look-down/shoot-down and terrain mapping.
    Especially suitable for the former east-bloc countries in Europe, the L-159 can carry much of the NATO standard ammunition and has the ability to upgrade to new weapons systems in near future. ECM pods and TIALD pods are definite future options, as displayed at the Farnborough airshow. For self protection the L-159 can carry a BAe Sky Guardian 200 Radar Warning Receiver, countermeasures dispensers system, cockpit armour and an ECM Jammer pod.
    So far, the only costumer for the L-159 ALCA is the Czech Air Force who in 1995 ordered 72 aircraft, but the aircraft is marketed heavily in the former Warsaw Pact countries and developing countries by Aero and its part owner Boeing.
